Netherlands Family Vacation Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Bantega

Your truly Dutch holiday begins when you arrive at your campsite called Minicamping Het Zwerversnest. Located in the South Frisian village called Bantega – Het Zwerversnest, this site includes a variety of accommodation options and amenities, all within a rustic, serene setting.

Check-in begins at 15:00, and you have the evening to yourselves to settle into your home for the week! An electric bicycle rental is included for the duration of your stay.

About Minicamping Het Zwerversnest

This campsite offers the perfect combination for a fantastic family vacation in the Netherlands. Enjoy an excellent location, a rustic camping experience, and comfort all in the heart of the Frisian Lake District. You will have access to countless walking, biking, and boating routes, as well as several nature reserves, all in the immediate vicinity.

The campsite offers shared sanitary facilities on site for all guests. There is also a playground for the kids and an indoor recreation space for fun and games.

Your accommodations are in one of the rustic Hiker’s Cabins, although you can opt to stay in a Safari Tent instead by request. A set of bed linen and daily breakfast is included with your stay.

Day 2Electric bike tour of a nature reserve

After breakfast, it’s time to set off on an electric bike trip! You will be provided with a map and directions, plus the bike tour itinerary. Take your time and explore the De Rottige Meente Reserve and De Weerribben Park. You’ll get to ride with the wind through the beautiful landscapes of Southern Friesland.

Visiting De Rottige Meente Reserve

Low peat, which is a type of wetlands, is unique to this region of Friesland. Efforts are being taken to restore the bogs and the natural water flow within them after large parts of the low moor were excavated for turf (peat) extraction and the groundwater levels had been lowered for agricultural use.

Today, you will explore the surrounding areas, and get the chance to meet the exceptional flora and fauna residing here. There are many ways to visit the nature reserve – you can bike, hike, or go by water. We recommend you explore by electric bike but also consider taking a kayaking tour!

The nature reserve is home to many birds, including falcons, owls, purple, silver and blue herons, as well as flora like the crab shear, which is a characteristic aquatic plant only growing in clean water and can grow to become sturdy floating vegetation you could walk ok like a “green water mat”.

There are various walking routes for those of you who would like to get to know the Rottige Meente by foot. These vary in difficulty and experience required, so we can definitely find the perfect match for you!

Day 3Exploring by water in a kayak or Sloop

Today, you can choose between kayaking and going on a sloop ride organised by your accommodation. We recommend you take a picnic lunch today to enjoy a full day outdoors.

Kayak tour

In cooperation with a local company, a kayak tour of the Rottige Meente can be organised for you. After biking or walking through the park yesterday, you’ll be surprised by the new perspective you gain from being on water. With peat pits and green vegetation all around, you might get the chance to see a grass snake swim by or hear the distinct voice of the bittern.

Sloepvaren

Whether you are tired from yesterday’s adventures or simply want to slow down and enjoy the day, renting a sloop for the day is the perfect option for you! By joining this tour, you will explore the reserve from a new perspective, focusing all your attention on spotting every bird and learning to tell apart the various water plants.

Day 4A day of relaxation

After exploring the reserve and national park over the last few days, your planning for today is focused on relaxation. Whether you choose to wander the farm roads in the area, go on a forest walk in the Kuinderbos, or venture out to the Gaasterland (an area famous for the Frisian lakes), the team of Het Zwerversnest will gladly give you some pointers and share local tips on finding the best paths!

Day 5Learning at the village of Lemmer

After breakfast today, you will head towards Lemmer to visit a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The entrance ticket is included in the tour and you are free to explore at your own pace.

More About Lemmer

Lemmer is a very special place to visit on your Netherlands family vacation. The main attraction is Woudagemaal, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as the largest steam-pumping station in the world. It’s actually still functional, too! It was used as recently as last year as a preventive measure during heavy rainfall to lower the water level in the Frisian lakes and canals. If you are lucky enough to visit on a training day, you will witness the station going “up in steam”.

Walking around the town, you will notice characteristic canal locks and traditional churches, as well as picturesque canals and, of course, Lemmer Beach.

Day 6A day at the farm, including cow cuddles!

Have you always wanted to have a taste of farm life? You get a chance today! You will have a day out at a recreational farm, where a special activity will be held. Here, you will uncover several facts about cows and have the time to bond with them during the cuddle hour!

Day 7Free day in Bantega

Today is your last day! Because there are so many activities to choose from, here’s your chance to visit a place you haven’t had the time to explore. Whether it’s De Woudfennen sauna complex, the tropical flower garden at De Orchideeën Hoeve, or you wish to go back and explore more of Lemmer…it’s all up to you! Spend the final day of your classic Dutch family vacation however you’d like.

Day 8Departure

You will depart from Bantega today. We hope you enjoyed your truly Dutch holiday! We wish you a safe trip home or to your next destination.
